ASSAULT IN HOTEL
OFFENCE BY MAORI "Ho felt he was insulted owing to his race," said Mr. Sullivan, when appearing for a Maori, William John Gemmell, in the Police Cour,t on Saturday. Geinmell pleaded guilty, under provocation, to assaulting James Phillip Hooks. It was stated that Hooks, a scowmaster, entered a hotel in the city on Friday afternoon and was approached hv accused, who called liini a name and struck him on the mouth, knocking out four teeth. Accused had not been in trouble previously. Mr. Sullivan said that complainant spoke ehaffingly to accused and called him an offensive name, besides referring to his colour. Accused was fined £2 and ordered to pay £2 10s, the estimated cost of repairing Hooks' teeth, in default seven days' imprisonment.
