Art in New Zealand
'fHE delicate art of T. A. McCormack, a Wellington watercolourist, is given a place of honour in the latett issue of Art in New Zealand. Two examples of Mr. McCormack's Work, a landscape and a floWcr-piccc, are reproduced in colour and four more in monochrome, with appreciations by Roland Hipkins and J. C. Beaglehole. Both writers refer to the " caligraphic " quality of his brushwork, which they find akin to that of the old Chinese painters. Dr. Beaglehole rightly suggests that half-a-dozen of Mr. McCormack's pictures should be acquired for the National Gallery, and most readers of the magazine will heartily agree with httn. Other contents include a brief history of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from its foundation in 1882, an illustrated account of sketching experiences at the head of the Franz Josef Glacier, by Alan C. Browne, A.R.C.A., and a technical description of the methods used by K. M. Ballantyne, of Wellington, in making monotypes, or pictures painted upon opal glass or copper and then transferred to paper. The result of the magazine's annual poem competition is announced, and the winning entry, "Aria with Insects," by Robin Hyde, of Auckland, is printed. There are ample notes on recent events m the New Zealand art world.
