Combining Utility, Economy and Beauty Bricks provide us with a building unit which, while possessing utility in the highest degree, allows the economical expression of beauty in colour and tone, an ever-increcising requirement of present-day building construction. The exact proportions of a brick, inside the limitations of weight and volume, are of course determined by further constant considerations, the geometry of bonding! and the constructional necessity of breaking joint. The primary characteristics of brick are of a permanent nature, unalterable by fluctuations in social habit and outlook that determine t&e course of architectural design. Standardised from the beginning, they have proved their worth in providing a unit which not only gives economy in use, coupled with beauty in appearance, but also offers highest resistance to the ravages of time and weather. We are at the present time passing through a vogue for so-called "modern" construction, and it is sometimes said that brick is not applicable to thia. Such a statement is untrue and signifies that a proper consideration of bricks has not been given. Brick, scientifically used, is just as modern a material as any, and, let us aay, it provides greater elasticity in design and use than is possible with many of the later forms of construction, and enables decorative expression at extremely low cost. It is this latter point of cost which so concerns us to-day. Rapidly increasing prices of timber, together with the difficulty of securing matured and quality supplies, is driving us to look to brick, and we would say to intending home builders: " Before building, examine the possibilities of being able to afford to build m brick." We do not think that there is any necessity to dwell on the advantages of brick construction. These advantages are known consciously or subconsciously to us all, and are accepted. It is a fact, though, that to-day brick construction can be employed in close competition with other common forma of building materials, while it can be employed in any type of design, either traditional, period or " modern." r.
