GROCERS' PROBLEMS
NEW LABOUR LEGISLATION CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Friday A meeting of Wellington grocers has been called for Tuesday to discuss the position arising out of the new industrial legislation. The president of the Wellington Master Grocers' Association, in an interview, said that, although the majority of grocers expressed themselves in agreement with the Government's policy of shorter working hours, they felt it impossible to continue selling the necessaries of life at cost price, as at present.. What with the unfair trading methods and price-cutting of the past, he said, and now the rising costs with shorter working hours, many small retailers were looking to the future with a feeling of despair. Yesterday he called on 35 grocers, and enrolled 22 new members. Twelve old ones promised to take a more active part in the organisation.
