RACE INTERVALS

NEW RULE RETAINED DATES FOR NEXT SEASON CONTROL OF TROTTING [llY TEL KG HA I'll —OWN COBHHSrONDENT ] WELLINGTON, Wednesday At tlio annual meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference to-day, Mr. B. S. Irwin, Dunedin, was the chairman. A remit, proposed by the Gore delegates and supported by those representing the Auckland, New Brighton and Invercargill Trotting Clubs, seeking the extension of the interval between races beyond"3s minutes, which is now obligatory, was defeated. Supporters of the remit urged that it. was impossible to maintain scheduled starting times with such a short period between events. Wellington, Taranaki and the majority of the South Island representatives stated that some clubs had been able approximately to maintain such a timetable and the position would improve as the public became used to making their investments promptly. A letter was read from the Auckland Trotting Club, recommending that the broadcast descriptions of races be discontinued, as they affected the attendances. Alternatively, it was suggested by the club that fees should be distributed among the clubs who used broadcasts, instead of being retained by the conference. The chairman explained that the matter had been discussed the previous evening by representatives of the Racing and Trotting Conferences, when it had been decided to leave the question to bo discussed by the two presidents with the Government, whose policy in this respect was nyt known It was decided to agree to this course.

[IJY TEMCGUAI'H —OWN CORUKSI'ONDBNTj WELLINGTON, Wednesday

In referring to proposals for new gaming legislation in his address to tin; Trotting Conference to-day, Mr. 15. S. Irwin mentioned that the Hon. .1. McLeod in the Legislative Council last .September, had fiuoted inures showing the annual turnover of the totalisator as £3,000,000 and that of the hookmaker as £4,000,000. Surely there .should he some means of tapping its flow into the proper channels. Since the sotting up of the lietting Control Hoard in Kngland it had enabled the trustees to make grants to worthy objects out of the excess of annual revenue over expenditure. Recently grants for specific purposes were made, sometimes to the extent of £SOOO. The same could bo achieved in New Zealand if the Government would divert into the totalisator under its control the £4,000,000 mentioned. The tax on that sum would go a long way in swelling the Government's coffers, and so help the country, said Mr. Irwin. HAROLD LOGAN PLANS VETERAN PACER RESUMES A Christchurch report states that Harold Logan's excellent health and condition, following a holiday, have encouraged his owner, Mr. JO. F. C. Hinds, to give him another period of racing, and the veteran pacer has resumed training under F-. Hawtin at Now Brighton. The retirement of Harold Logan has been announced several times in the past 18 months, but the possibility of his receiving n more favourable handicap from the reassessment board, to the extent of 24yds. from his present mark, may have been the principal reason for the resolve to return him to training. Harold Logan will appear at Addington next month, and, all going well, in November also. The IU-year-old champion's last success was in the New Zealand Cup Trial at Hutt Park.
