TOUBNEY IN SYDNEY NEW SOUTH WALES TITLE DEFEAT OF WATERSON By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright {Received July 7, 11.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 7 The second round of the New South Wales amateur golf championship to-day was noteworthy owing to the unexpected defeat of N. A. Waterson, the youngest competitor who is amateur champion of Queensland, by the veteran George Thompson at the 37th hole. Thompson was deadly with his short approaches and putting. Waterson's weak putting, on the other hand, led to his defeat. I). Esplin, who holed an approach shot of moro than 80 yards, played .fine golf to defeat P. Hughes 8 and 7. H. Hatterslev, whose drives were phenomenal —one of them with the wind being more than 300 yards—beat A. Black 7 and 6. T. McKay beat D. Da vies 2 and 1. It. Withvcombe, J. Barkel and R. Dickson won their matches. The winners of the quarter-finals in the women's New South Wales championship to-day were Mesdames R. Pennefather, L. Hore, R. Clements and Clive Robinson.
