COMETRA AND STROME DESTROYED AT TRENTHAM JOCKEYS' MINOR INJURIES [BY TELEGRAPH —FROM ARCHER] WELLINGTON, Tuesday Two horses, Cometra and Strome, during the running of the Mariri Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, sustained injuries that necessitated their destruction. Mcßae, who rode Illuminagh in tho same race, rccoived a shoulder injury and was unable to ride later in the day. W. .1. McDowell was weighed out to ride Hunting Jay in the Vittoria Hurdles, but as a result of a fall from Cordon, a doctor declared him unfit to ride and the mount was taken by J. Sharkey. Hunting Jay caused a great deal of'delay at the barrior by his misbehaviour and was eventually badly left, although he set out after the field and completed the course. STANDS AT AVOM3ALE IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED Under a scheme of improvement planned to begin at tho Avondale Jockey Club's racecourse, following tho Dargaville meeting in October, the grandstand and members' stand are to be moved forward to positions nearer the racing track, which was reformed some years ago. Tho provision of concrete terraces will increase the seating accommodation to about doublo its present capacity. "The finances of the club arc in a very satisfactory position, and the committee now feels justified in considering necessary improvements it lias had in mind for a long time past," said Mr. _J. K. Wells, president of the club, at its annual meeting yesterday. He roferred to the shifting of the stands, and tho I'.inuation of terraces in accordance with the club's original plan. It was pronosed, he said, to dispense with the nresent steps, and to lny eoncroto terisices fronting tho full extent of tho s nuidstand. They also hoped to increase (he seating in the members' stand for members' wives and daughters. This improvement was recognised as being long overdue, and Mr. Wells said if finances would allow, bo would like to see it carried out in conjunction with the shifting of the stands. If the committee obtained a satisfactory estimato of the cost of the work, it would take steps to put it in hand in October. Tlio committee's aim was to cater for tho demands of patrons and members at the earliest convenience.
