CLEARING A STREAM
USE OF RELIEF LABOUR PROPOSAL AT WHANGAREI [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WHANGAREI, Tuesday "There is no reason why you should not get the use of unemployed labour to do this work," said the Minister of Public "Works, Hon. It. Somplo, at Whangarei to-dav, when the Borough Council and the Whangarei Co-operative Dairy Company asked for some assistance in removing obstructions from the Waiarohia stream, which has caused damage by flooding. Mr. Semple pointed out that b.f cleaning out the bed of the stream, straightening the course of the waterway, and widening the space between tho banks at tho bridge near the dairy factory, the trouble could bo overcome. This would involve lengthening the bridge and shifting the abutments back, while a water main which crossed the stream near tho bridge would have to be raised above flood level He asked that an estimate of the cost of doing this work bo submitted to him, so that he could go into the matter of providing something toward tho cost of the labour. "We are going to use that labour for some more beneficial use than in the past," said the Minister. "It will be better to do that if it is going to create or protect assets."
