ANTARCTIC WINTERS

ILLUSTRATED LECTURE THE SHIPLOVERS' SOCIETY A description of life at Antarctica when a polar expedition has to winter there was given by Sir. C. Reginald Ford to members of the Shiplovers' Society last night. The three members nf the Norwegian yacht Ho-Ho, Messrs. T Schyberg, J:t. Bryhn, and T. Ostmoon, were guests of tho society and were made honorary members. Captain H. H. Sergeant, the harbourmaster, presided. Mr. Ford, aa a member of one of Captain It. F. Scott's expeditions, had to spend two winters at Antarctica. Illustrating his talk with a number of slides made from photographs lie took on the expedition, he spoke of the rigours of life in the Polar regions and told how the members of the expedition lived during their enforced inactivity. He alto pointed out the difficulties that Scott, without the scientific facilities that explorers now enjoyed, had to overcome. Many of the method* that Scott adopted, however, said Mr. Ford, were still used by Polar expeditions. Mr. Ford's statements about tho methods used to keep life interesting were confirmed by Mr. H. Hamilton, who is directing the carving work at the Maori Arts and Crafts School, Rotorua. Mr. Hamilton visited Antarctica with Sir Douglas Mawson on one of his expeditious.
