PEARLING INDUSTRY
JAPANESE DEVELOPMENT REPRESENTATIVE AT DARWIN DARWIN, July 7 Every indication makes it apparent that the Japanese intend to develop a pearling industry in North Australian waters. Mr. Komatsu, representing a Japanese company which is buying pearl shell, who has arrived at Darwin, has given assurances that Japanese pearlers will not be allowed to land either at Bathurst or Melville Islands, where there have been complaints about the activities of Japanese crews. Mr. Komatsu expresses the hope that the Australian authorities' pearling fleets will work in co-operation with the Japanese for the sake of the industry, in which the Japanese flee.t outnumbers the Australian by three to one.
