STORMY CONDITIONS : GALES AND HEAVY SHOWERB The weather report and forecast for New Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, were as follows: —A very intense extensive westerly depression covers tlio New Zealand area and is moving eastward. An anticyclone is located over eastern Australia and is advancing on to the Western Tasinan. The forecast is for southerly winds in the far south, elsewhere westerly but south-westerly or southtn'lies extending over the Dominion shortly of strong to gale force and in places reaching strong gale force. Seas in New Zealand waters high on the west coast and rough north of the East Cape, elsewhere rough to high. Eastern Tasinan Sea: South-westerly to southerly gales and high seas. The weather is likely to be stormy and changeable with heavy showers in most districts, hail in places and snow on the high country. Temperatures will become coul. Conditions should improve later on the west coast of the South Island. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST SQUALLY WITH HAIL AT TIMES The Government meteorologist issued to the Hkrai.d last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland,Province: —Strong, westerly winds to gale and in places strong gale force, hacking to south-westerlies. The weather is likely to bo jtormy and changeable with heavy showers and hail at, times, and temperatures becoming cold. Seas high on tne west coast and rough on the east coast. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland. —Severe westerly 6quallg with heavy rain experienced early yesterday morning were followed by a fresh breeze and overcast threatening weather all day. Heavy rain fell for a short period in the afternoon and during the evening squalls and heavy showers were experienced at frequent intervals. The temperature at 4 p.m. was 58 degrees. There was very little movement of the barometer, which continued very low all day but rose slightly in the evening. Barometer, midnight, rising .. 29.35 in, Midnight, Sunday .. .. 29.30 in. Wellington.—A north-westerly gale blew most of the morning, but it moderated in the afternoon. The weather otherwise was fine and sunny. The minimum temperature on Sunday night was'" 46 degrees. The maximum yesterday was 53 degrees. Christch ureh. —The day was clear in the morning and rather cloudy in the afternoon with a strong north-westerly wind. The maximum temperature was 49 degrees, and the minimum 39 degrees. The barometer was rising slowly and registered 29.05 in. last evening. Dunedin. —The barometer commenced to fall sharply at midnight on Saturday and continued to do so until Sunday night. There wa* then a slight rise, but pressure again fell to the unusually low mark of 28.50 in. Yesterday dull weather with rain developing in the afternoon was experienced, but temperatures were mild until the evening when a cold change occurred.
