Fatal burns were suffered to-day by Mr. John Evan Johnson, aged 50, a well-known grazier, in distressing circumstances.
Mrs. Johnson was rubbing her husband's back with methylated spirits before a fire in the living room of their home at Gilgandra, a town 292 miles north-west of Sydney, when the bottle of spirits exploded and set fire to Mr. Johnson's pyjamas. Terrible burns had been inflicted before the wife could subdue the flames with a blanket. Then she ran a mile for assistance.
Upon Mrs. Johnson's return she saw the house in flames. It was completely destroyed.
Mr. Johnson had managed to scramble outside the house and had taken refuge under a tree, but he died in the local hospital. The couple's former house was destroyed by fire.
