FINAL TRIALS

TRACK A QUAGMIRE

LAST LOOK OVER HORSES

SOME JUMPING ACCOMPLISHED

[by telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON, Monday

Conditions at Trentham this morning for the final gallops were very unpleasant, a westerly gale raging, frequent showers. Tho track was soon a quagmire. Timing on the flat was useless and was seldom attempted, as it provided no line, but there was some schooling by steeplechasers and hurdlers. llluminagh (J. Mcßae), Tangled (C. Thomson), Battleground (S. A. Wright), Kaola (A. Gilmer), and Llyn Dhu (J. Walsh) went over tho big country on the course proper. Llyn Dhu broke down after two fences and the others went on, llluminagh, Tangled and Battleground finishing together, clear of Kaola. They all jumped well. Forest Glow (0. Thomson), Conietra (Mr. G. H. James), and Manawatu (A. McDonald) did the same schooling and shaped well, Manawatu, ridden into his fences, showing much improvement. Emotion and Blue Tiger

Over the hurdles, Emotion and Blue Tiger gave a sound display. Tho latter should run well.

Beau Gallanto and Aiguille were not impressive after Beau Gallanto, at the first attempt, had run off and taken his companion with him. Snowball, Mustang, Lapel and Clarion Call worked particularly well on tho flat, showing a liking for the conditions.

Mustang easily accounted for Boomerang over six furlongs, and Lapel, with Caen, went well over tho same distance. Caen was fractious at the start, but for a hack showed up well. Royal Banquet was worked, Jmt his trainer is not satisfied with his condition and says he will not bo a starter to-morrow.

Havering takes the eyo with his perfect condition. He is an old horse, but he is in wonderful order.

Bed Sun worked and pulled up all right, but ho has been scratched for to-morrow's engagement. Santoft, a well-conditioned horse from Auckland, wdl start on tho flat to-morrow and take his place in the high-weight on Thursday, in which he should be hard to beat. Confidence in Mustang Golden Ridge is not present so far, and it is understood he will bo missing from the Woburn Handicap. The Smuggler looks well. His trainer says he was tho unluckiest horse racing at Auckland and expects him to run wod here. Black Marlin lias improved recently and is a possibility. Lapel has worked well on the heavy tracks and is likely to run well in tho Whyte Handicap Vocal has been very sore and may not be at his best. If a surprise is brought off in the Te Aro Handicap it may be by Corowa. H. Dulieu is -very confident that Mustang will run well in the Whyte Handicap. Windsor Lad (J. Muir), went alone over three fences on tho course proper at a slow pace and Cordon (C. Thomson), also gave a safo display over five fences.
