FALSE DECLARATION
UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT SINGLE MAN'S OFFENCE "One can understand a man with a family resorting to this, but there is no excuse for a single man," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at tho Otahuhu Police Court yesterday, when Frederick George Evans (Mr. Elwarth) admitted making a false statement for the purpose of obtaining benefit under the Employment Promotion Act. An officer of the Labour Department stated that on April 16 defendant, a single man, had made a declaration that his income for a period of 10 days was only 10s 6d, whereas it had been ascertained that his earnings were ovei £4. Defendant had made four false declarations, but was being prosecuted in respect of one only. As a result of that declaration, defendant had obtained £2 16s from the funds.
Counsel said that prior to applying for benefit, defendant had been out of work for six or seven weeks, and had paid no board. On receiving his wages, ho had paid his board arrears and declared his income at tho balance in hand, instead of the full amount earned. There had been no wilful intention to defraud tho department. A fine of £o, with costs, was imposed. Defendant was allowed two weeks to pay.
