/AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS FINALS AT MIDDLEMORE McCOY WINS CAPTAIN'S PRIZE Although recent rains had the efTect of minimising the run of the ball, golf courses were playing well on Saturday when competitions were continued ""bV tho various clubs. Of chief interest at Middlemore was the meeting of two youthful players, S H. Abel and H. .At. McCoy, in tho final of the captain's prize tourney. McCoy met with success and, while his uin was not unexpected, tho contest was rather one-sided as Abel failed to strike form. McCoy took tho lead at the first hole and after halving tho next ]ie won the-next four holes. He became g up at the turn and Abel won his first and only hole in the match when lie obtained a 3 at the 10th. The game finished in favour of McCoy when lie played the 12th and 13th holes soundly to win both. In the No. 2 handicap match-play event, W. A. Donald defeated AV. M. ]i P H at the lftli after a very even game. The chief features of the match were magnificent drives by Donald and two line recoveries by Bell at a critical stage. At the 17th 801 l played a beautiful pitch which enabled him to obtain the half and at the following hole ho repeated the shot. From about 80 yards out his ball finished two feet from the hole and as ho was in receipt of a stroke it appeared to be the winning shot. However, Donald chipped up well from the edge of tho green to stymie his opponent and halve tho hole. In the senior grade of tho Stableford bogey -B. H. Menzies had a_ stroko round of "3, 'and his total of 37 points was two more than that of E. L. liartleet, the runner-up. C. V. Mark was the best of tho juniors, his score of 34 points being the result of a net round ° The scoring was good in the bogey event at Titirnngi, F. AV. Lucas winning with a splendid card of 3 up. T. Morpeth was next and G. C. Jones headed tho 'juniors. , In the fi'.'st round of the C. J. Schnauer Memorial Cup match at Mattugakiekie the long-markers set a high standard. L. C. AVinter, from a handicap of 23, returned a G7 net and W. D. McClintock was two strokes more. , . The second round of a series of medal matches for the vice-president's trophy was played at North Shore. J. Bull led the field and he was followed by D. T. Maingay, while A. E. Browne's 75 was the best gross score of the day. The captain's prize at Glendowio was advanced a further stage and in the third round H. 0. Jones defeated Dr. Horton at tho 19th. J. D. Stedman won the concurrent bogey match with a card of 2 down. The first round of the handicap match-play tourney for the Edwards trophy was played at Akarana. A Stableford bogey which was held in conjunction was won by C. N. Jacobsen with a total of 39 points. Jacobsen had -a splendid round of 7-1.
