CONTESTS IN COUNTRY GAMES PLAYED ON SATURDAY MANUKAU TEAM BEATS PAEROA Rugby football competitions were continued in country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon. The Manukau senior team from Auckland paid a visit to Paeroa. where it defeated the home fifteen. Mr.tches for cups were decided in other places. Hamilton. —Old Boys remained unbeaten In the senior inter-union competition, defeating Frankton by 21 points to 10. After a few minutes of midfield play Old Boys' forwards broke through and 11. Lissette came up auickly to score. His brother, A. Lissette, converted! Frankton was soon on the attack and from a scrum 20yds out the halfback, Snodprass, dummied and swerved his way over for Sin excellent try. Within a few minutes a forward, Sklenars, scored Frankton's second trv. Then H. Lissette made a good opening ac half-way and transferred to J. Paeroa.—There was a good attendance to witness the Rugby match between Manukau Auckland) and the Paeroa representative team at Paeroa. Play was fast and ] esting throughout and some good football was witnessed Pepper, the All Black, was prominent throughout, and Brimble alsoplayedgrea football. The game resulted in a win lor Manukau bv 14 points to 6. Irom a lineout the Manukau forwards broke away and the movement ended in Halford scoring. Fast following up when Hankin misfielded enabled the local pack to secure and Bel scored. Manukau shortly afterward carried play the length of the field and McLaren scored, Wiklund converting. Matakana" established an early lead and as tho result of a try and a field goal, both by R. Ainsley, had a margin of seven points in the first quarter. For Te Puna, M. Hartnett and W. Mathieson each scored, one being converted by L. Ririnui. At half-time Te I'una led B—7.8 —7. The second half was very even, G. Tu scoring for Te Puna and J. Ririnui converted, while T. Kuka gained a try for Matakana. The game ended in Te Puna's favour by 13 to 10. The other senior game, between Cadets Old Boys and Rangataua, was' won by Rangataua by 6 to 0. Te Kuiti.—Matamata defeated the Maniapoto sub-union representatives by 14 points to 11 in an open game that culminated in a very exciting finish. In the first half Matamata was superior. Clean handling by the backs, who were getting the ball front most of the line-outs and a fair proportion of 'lie scrums, enabled the team to run up a score of 14—3. In the second spell Maniapoto fame to light, the opposing team tiring, vith the result that the Matamata backs saw little of the ball. With the scoro at 11—11 great excitement prevailed as Maniapoto was attacking hard. Whangarei.—ln a game lacking in brilliance, ■ llikiirangi defeated City in tlie senior A Rugby football championship by lf> points to <;, before a good attendance of spectators. The ground was in good order, and the score was not a true index to the merits of the respective teams. The City team failed to take advance of several opportunities for scoring. The llikiirangi forwards obtained the ball more frequently from the scrums, and Conway, its halfback, took every advantage of this. lle was the outstanding back on the ground. The other backs in the llikiirangi team were inaccurate in their passing movements, and llolmwood, the fullback, did not play his usual good game. Campbell, wingthreecniarter, was fortunate in his cutting-in, one resulting in his scoring a try. The forwards all played well, and were superior to their opponents. Mclnnes, Brydon and Redwood were very prominent. The City team was unfortunate in not having the services of Hurch among the backs and Clotworthy and Dent in the forwards. Rangataiki-Whakatane. —Keen interest was displayed bv a record crowd of spectators at one of the most exciting matches seen in the Bav of Plenty for many years. The game was played at Matata between Rangataiki and Whakatane for the Te IlurunuiApanui Shield. Whakatane played brilliant football in the second spell, the last 10 minutes bringing many spectacular attacks, but Rangataiki's defence was very sound. After leading at half-time by eight points to nil, Rangataiki won by 13 points to !>. Scorers for the winners were Renata, E. Howell and R. Lees, C. Francis converting two tries.
