NOTES ON RUNNING

EPRIS WINS FAST-RUN MILE

SILVER SAIL BEST SPRINTER

[bt telegraph OWN correspondent' DUNEDIN, Saturday

The Oamarii Jockey Club's Winter Meeting was held in dull weather and attracted a good attendance. The track was as firm 'as in the summer.

Night Cap outstayed Nocturnus in the Hack and Hunters' Steeples and Fiord was tort good for the opposition in the Novice Handicap, but was perhaps lucky to beat the Songbird gelding, Mutus, who made up a deal of ground after getting badly away. . Half Note was made favourite for the Grange' Handicap, but after being first to show out, she drifted to tho tail of the field. Execution, who started second favourite, got badly away with Cranford and Silver Lark, and although she joined the leaders at the home turn, the effort to get there settled her chance. Wino made the running from Epris, who outstayed the Cockpit gelding and put up a good performance under 9st. 71b. to win in 1.38. Cranford did well to finish third. Half Note's form was in marked contrast to her"'best, efforts at Wingatui. Travenna got well away, but he faded out. Probably, Half Note and Travenna did not appreciate the firm going. Last Refrain had practically a walkover in the Winter Handicap.

A straggling .start in the Farewell Handicap settled the chances of Violenta. Golden Vision, Call Money and Fiord, who all caused trouble at tho start. Silver Coat, Dissemble and Rose of Tralee ran together to the straight, where Silver Sail got on terms and won in a good finish with Rose of Tralee and Silver Coat. Dissemble dropped out. Call Money did well to finish a close 'fourth, after losing ground at the start.

[BT TELEGRAPH —PKKSS ASSOCIATION] DANNEVIRKE, Saturday

War Eagle, 9.7, and Royal Songster, 9-5, wore omitted from the list of acceptors for the Dannevirke Hunt Club Steeplechase.

ELLERSLIE TRAINING

SCHOOLING OF JUMPERS

The No. 3 grass was used for galloping at Ellerslie on Saturday and the schooling of several jumpers created interest.

Versant, carrying a solid weight, Woved freely over a round, running home the last, six furlongs in 1.20 1-5. Ho appears quite sound and may yet reward G. Holland for his perseverance. Rereatu completed six furlongs in 1-19, the final three occupying 40 4-ss. Speedfast (J. Sharkey) was schooled pver two pony hurdles, but he was not impressive. Gaseille (I). Craddock) negotiated the big fences on the fiat and gave a B Plend,d exhibition. He afterwards worked soundly on the No. 3 grass, completing a round in 1.48 2-5, the filial seven furlongs taking L4O 1-5. Lord Val (JL Walsh) had plenty of on in a school over four hurdles although his display was not as good as °n some previous occasions.
