WIN FOR UNIVERSITY TEAM

FINLAY CUP COMPETITION

Rugby football competitions were continued in country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon. The Auckland University team paid its annual visit to Mataiuata, where it scored a narrow win over the local representatives. In a match for the Finlay Cup at Morrinsville the home team was successful against Cambridge by a narrow margin. The following results of matches were forwarded by correspondents of the Herald: —

Hamilton.—The Hamilton Rugby Union continued its inter-union competition at Rugby Park. In the game on No. 1 ground, in which Marist played Technical Old Boys, tjio latter won by 12 points to 5. Technical was tho first to score, Partington picking up the ball about Marist's twenty-five and making a spectacular run. Ho failed to convert. From a set scrum at half-way tho ball came out on the Technical side, and went right through the backs to Stevens, who ran 20yds to score. Technical, dribbling the ball up the field, enabled Partington to take tho ball over the lino for another try. The halftime scoro was:-—Technical, 9; Marist. 0. From a line-out at half-way Ryan, a Marist forward, crossed the line. Dempsey converted. Dempsey sustained a kick on tho knee and retired, being replaced by O'Leary. Fardington was successful with a penalty kick, and tho gamo ended: —Technical Old Boys, 3'2; Marist, 5. The curtain-raiser resulted in To Kowhai defeating Technical Old Boys by 3 0 points to !)., Tho game on No. 2 ground, between Taupiri West and Frankton, proved to be exciting. Taupiri won by 33 points to 3. Tries for Taupiri wore scored by Morton, Armukiti and Simon. Wilson converted two of the tries. Pearson scored for Frankton. Rovers, 18, defeated Marist, 0, in a junior match. Other junior results were:—Old Boys, 18, Railway, 10; Ruakura won by deiault from Karamu. Third grade: Technical Old Bovs, lu, Old Boys, 3; Frankton, tl'J. Technical School, 3. Fourth grade: City, 11, Frankton, t). Intermediate grade: Marist, 2<, Technical B, 6.

Matamata. —Tho Auckland. University Rugby team paid its annual visit to Matamata and played a match with tho Matamata representatives. University was. successful by 11 points to !) in a game in which Matamata had the territorial advantage for the most part. Matamata was first to score, all the backs handling for Lovvr.v to obtain a goon try from an opening mudo by 1. Germann. Cole converted. Hayman kicked a penal..v goal for the visitors, and then M. Dixon made a good run for University, which resulted in Thomas scoring, and the visitors led by one point at half-time. Immediately after the restart Kirkland made a great run to Matamata territory, but lost possession. However, his forwards came up in support and Thomas went over for another try, which Havman converted. H. Settle potted a goal for Matamata and tho game ended with the visitors t%o points up. Swap, Settle. . Cole and Brown were prominent among Minamata's ranks, and Warrender, Munro, Madill and Wright were outstanding in the forwards. Tor University Kirkland, Cooney and Hayman, in the backs, and Thomas and 1/ange, of the forwards, were prominent. Morrinsville. —The Morrrinsville sub-union senior representatives successfully defenaeil the Finlay Cup, the senior sub-union championship trophy of the Waikato, against Cambridge seniors, winning ouo of the most: exciting mutches seon on the Morrinsville (ground by 8 points to 5. Cambridge was the first challenger for the cup and Morrinsville will now meet Matamata on Saturday week. Morrinsville led by B—o at half-time, tries being scored by It. Clarkin from .a passing movement by the backs and by his brother. T Clarkin, from loose play on the Cambridge line. W. Cameron converted the first try. iiie Morrinsville forwards had dominated play in the first half and given their backs of tho ball, allowing Russell, the Waikato hallback, to initiate several bright passing movements. Tho tackling of the Cambridge backs was sound and several times \\. Cameron, the Morrinsville second five-eighths, was tackled when he attempted to cut through, whih Vivian, on the right .wing, was several times well stopped after Aitken had run him in) position from passing movements. After halftime tho Cambridge forwards snowed much moro dash and repeatedly bustled the Morrinsville backs. The Morrinsville forwards were pressing when N. Holmes, the Cambridge fiveeighths, took advantage of a dropped pass to kick tmfield regain possession of the bouncing ball, and score near the Morrinsville posts. Ho converted his try. A hard game ended with Morrinsville leading by 8 points to 5. Mr. E. Dickie, of Hamilton, was referee. The Morrinsville team was without the services of J. Leeson tho Waikato 1934 All Black forward, who was a spectator owing to a knee injury which developed after his asrainst Auckland on the Kings Birthday. Tauranga.—The Tanranga Rugby Union's competitions were continued in dull weather. A light shower fell, but did not affect the ground conditions. The senior grade match between Matakana and Cadets Old Boys was keenly contested. Matakana, led at half-time bv 6 to O, a try each being gained by M. Sidney and R. Ainsley. Well through tho second half R. Jones scored for Cadets and shortly afterwards G. McKearney landed a penalty goal, the game ending in a draw, o—all. In the other senior game To Puna defeated Rangataua by to 8. Juniprs. Omokoroa, 15, Cadets Old Boys 0; Matapihi, 9, Rangataua, 3; Judea, 19, Athletic, 3. From a scramble in Otamatea's twenty-five Harkett went over. Otamatea was awarded* a penalty for offside play and E. Penny raised the flags. The second half had not been in progress long" before the Northern Wairoa hacks went away, the ball travelling to Osbaldiston on the wing, who fumbled, and C Winters snapped it up and ran thrtequarters the length of the field to beat c fullback and score, E. Penny converting. From a scrum the Northern Wairoa halfback, Hackett, passed quickly to Cassidy and Burk hardt, who cut through and scored. VValters tho Northern Wairoa centre, broke through and, with only tho fullback to beat, he shortpunted, but was hold up, Otamatea being lucky in escaping a penalty try. hhortl> afterwards, Service from a scrum, gave Osbaldiston the ball, and ho raced through to touch down just over the. line as he was tackled, but the try was disallowed. Thames. —In a fast and even gamo on a groasy ground, owing to rain falling during the match, Coromamlel defeated Thames senior B by six to" nil. The score was niado up of two tries. If. the junior match at Thames Ramblers defeated Old Boys by 18 points to 8. The representative game between Bangitaiki and Thames resulted in a win for the visiting team by 10 points to li. The game up to halftime was in Thames favour, the score being, 11 —<!, but the visiting hacks were too good for the local men in the second half, having a great advantage in weight. Ivor Thames Savage scored twice and converted one try. He also kicked a penalty goal. Bangitaiki scored five tries, two being converted. The Maoris initiated some brilliant passing movements, and as a result they won by 14 points to 8. A featuro of the ruatch was that B. White scored 11 of Kia Ton's points while his brother Charlie scored tho other three points. R. White was the outstanding player on the field. The first score came when he kicked a nico goal from a penalty Shortly afterwards, E. Wilson scored a fine try for Old Boys in the corner, Tapper converting with a magnificent kick. White, who scored between the posts and converted tho try It. White# provided the large attendance with a thrill when he ran three-quarters of the field to swerve past Edge, ilio fullback and score between the posts. Old Boys' second try camo when Massey, on tile wing, got the ball on the bounce with no-ono in front of him. His pace just got him ovei the line. There was no further score. In the senior section Manurewa wont down to Drur.v by !) to 0. Tho game was played at Drury before a largo attendance, and particularly bright football resulted. Tries were scored for Drury by 12. Cossey, W Cossey and It. Uault. In the other senior game Clevedon defeated Hunua by 10 points to 6. In the junior section a greatly improved Papakura team lowered Ararimu's colours for the first time in two seasons by 24 points to (!. A week earlier Ararimu was victorious ovor l'apakura by 29 to 0. Tho Clevedon juniors defeated Karaka by 27 points to 0. Whakatane. —A Rugby football match was playod between Whakatane and Opotiki on the Whakatane Domain and some brilliant football, of a class above the standard of that played last year, was seen. Whakatane, which proved successful, was unlucky not to make a bigger score. Tho match was solid and oven in the tirst half but Whakatane proved the better team in tho second spell. 0. Pile, ,T. pile and J. Broderick scored for Whakatane, F. Mollis converting two tries.. C. •Gage scored for Opotiki, Morgan converting. The final scoro was: Whakatane, 13; Opotiki, 5. All the Whakatane backs played well, but 7. Connolly, J. Pile and T. Shalfoon were outstanding. F. llollis was accurate in his goal kicking and be also playeil a fino five-eighths game. J. Broderick, J. Brown, J. Scott, M. Cuinmings and B. Mate wero the pick of the forwards. For Opotiki E. Gage and W. Poihipi wero outstanding. The Whakatane junior representatives outclassed the Rangitaiki juniors, defeating them bv 21 points to nil. Tho scorers were G. Lawson (2), It. King (2), M. Hotene (2), and It. Mason.

Te Awamutu.—Rugby competitions were continued at To Awamutu in dull, bleak weather. In the senior competition the leading team, Hamilton Old Hoys, maintained its unbeaten record by decisively defeating: lo Awamutu by points to (i. Tbo standard of play on the wliolo was disappointing, although toward the end of tho game Old Hovs, gaining possession from the scrums, showed to advantago in several back movements. To Awamutu was the first to score, the ball travelling to Bell, who cut in smartly Old Boys' backs then got going and Voice, beating his man cleverly, ran through to score. Lissette converted. Shortly afterward Adams was badly caught in possession and Thomas scored an easy try. Lissette added the extra points. The Te Awamutu forwards then carried play to Old Boys' lino, when, from a forward scramble, McAlpino dived over. Old Boys rallied in the second, spell and from then on dominated the game. In a series of bright passing rushes tries wero scored in quick succession by Gillespie (2), and Carroll, Lissotte converting two. Waiuku. —Mangatawhiri met Waiuku at Rugby Park in tho second day's play in tho South Auckland Union's senior competition. A hard game, fairly fast in the closing stages, resulted, but neither sido scored. R. Neil, at halfback for Waiuku, gave a promising exhibition, while A. McKobbio, centre-three-quarter for Mangatawhiri, was a very useful player. R. I)can, the Mangatawhiri fullback, played a sound game. Tuakau. —A game in tho South Auckland Union's senior competition resulted in Franklin defeating Pukekohe by !!• points to .13 after an interesting game. In the first half Pukekoho offered poor resistance and at tho interval .Franklin led by 1G to 3. In the second half, however, Pukekoho rallied and the Franklin players were only inside Pukekohe's twenty-five yards line onco and that was when a try was scored. Pukekoho had much the better of the game in tho second spell. For Franklin, Cecil Wilson scored two tries and P. Carter and S. Lowrie one try each. Passau converted two tries and kicked a penalty goal. A. Hewitt gained two unconverted tries for Pukekohe, \V. Taylor kicked a field goal and N. Sandin kicked a penalty goal.

Pukekohe. —Tho single junior match in the South Auckland Union's competition between Pukekohe and Franklin resulted in a draw, neither side scoring. Te Puke.—There was only one match played at Jubilee Park, this being between Papamoa and Maketu, but it proved to be one of the keenest games of the season. Messrs. J. B. llolfo, Putaruru. and B. Chapman, Morrinsvillo, wero appointed to share the management. Advice was received from tho New Zealand Rugby Union that an application for a subsidy of £SO (o enable the tour to bo financed had been declined. Mr. Yardley considered the paddock should be retained for football, especially for the young people, for whom no adequate provision had bean made in Hamilton. It was decided to ask the Borough Council to reconsider the matter.

ENGLISH PROPOSALS ALTERATIONS TO RULES LONDON, Juno 20 Tho English Rugby Union has decided to recommend (o tho International Board alterations to tho rules, including the following:— A dropped goal to count three points. A goal from a mark to count two points. A penalty try awarded for an infringement should ho given between tho posts. Simplification of scrummage and tackling laws is also recommended. It was agreed to invito suggestions for amendment of tho offside rule, with a view to restricting tho scopo of the wing-forward. The International Board will consider the recommendations in September, but no chango in the laws will take effect before 1037.
