CYCLONIC STORM

GALE AND RAIN

UNPLEASANT WEEK-END

COASTAL BOATS DELAYED

A cyclonic disturbance of considerable strength was experienced during the week-end, the conditions being very boisterous all (J wet. After the centre of the disturbance had crossed New Zealand yesterday the conditions improved, but continued threatening. The freshening north-cast wind which was blowing 011 Saturday increased during the evening, when frequent showers wore experienced. The wind reached gale force yesterday morning, but at mid-day it changed to the northwest and moderated considerably. Improved conditions prevailed in the afternoon and evening, but occasional light showers fell.

The approach of tho storm toward Now Zealaud was indicated by the barometer, which was failing rapidly after Friday night. At mid-day yesterday it registered 29.45 in., having fallen .75in. in 36 hours. It afterwards continued low, a rise of only .05in. being recorded by midnight. A number of coastal vessels were delayed by the boisterous conditions and they either had to return to port or go to a sheltered anchorage in tho Hauraki Gulf. The motor-vessels Tiri and Motu left for Awanui on Saturday afternoon, but, owing to the rough seas in tho gulf, they returned to port about two hours later. The motor-vessol Toa left for Tauranga at 10.20 p.m., but she anchored in Islington Bay for shelter. Early yesterday morning the Motu again left for Awanui, but she only got as far as Rangitoto Reef, where she anchored. When the conditions improved yesterday afternoon both the. Motu and Toa left their anchorage and the Tiri left port. The only overseas vessel delayed by the weather was the Nobel auxiliary schooner Huia, which was due from Melbourne yesterday. She is now expected to arrive to-day.
