DEPREDATIONS OF KEA
SHEEPOWNERS' CONCERN
ENCOURAGING EXTERMINATION
[by telegraph OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN, Saturday
A discussion on the depredations of the kea and the heavy loss of sheep from this cause, especially in the high country, took place at the annual meeting of the Otago and Southland Sheep Owners' Union. Members were in complete agreement as to the necessity for the extermination of keas, and the fact was elicited that arrangements had been made by which the Government would subsidise sheep owners and local bodies at the rate of 2s 6d a beak, provided the same amount was found by them respectively, thus making the bonus 7s 6d a beak. It was also suggested that deer cullers should be instructed to kill keas in the back country.
