The statement is I balanced at £28,666,997, or £97,539 I less than at the close of the previous I week. The note issue, after several successive decreases, has increased by j £30,580 for tho week. Government dej posits are £22,576 higher, but those of ! the trading banks have fallen by £228,678. Other demand liabilities are £52,806 higher. An unusual item, "liabilities in currencies other than New Zealand currency," appears in this return, the amount against it being £18,600. This is uncommon, but has occurred twicei | before, in December last and in ! January. On each of those occasions I the sum shown was £124,000.
