ABSENCE OF KING
ASCOT RACE MEETING INTEREST IN GOLD CUP British Wireless RUGBY, June 16 Owing to Court mourning, the King and other members of the Royal Family did not attend the Royal Ascot race meeting, which opened in fine weather to-day. The King's interest in the meeting, however, was displayed last evening when Jie drove to the racecourse and inspected the arrangements in the Royal Box, which was bedecked with flowers. The Royal enclosure was also visited. The King then went to the Royal stables, whore horses owned by His Majesty and Lord Derby, which will be running this week, are kept. Main interest centres in the race for the Gold Cup on Thursday.
