CANTON AND TOKIO FRICTION CONTINUES FEARS OF ARMED ACTION ANTI-JAPANESE SPIRIT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received June 17, 6.5 p.m.) CANTON, June 16 Grave fears of armed Japanese intervention in South China are expressed as the result of the Canton Government's defiant reply to the Japanese Consul-General's protest against anti-Japanese demonstrations.

The reply bluntly declared that the demonstrations were the inevitable sequels to Japan's aggression in North China. If Japan wished them to cease she must change her behaviour. The Canton Government promised full protection of Japanese nationals, but emphasised that tbe authorities could not prohibit anti-Japanese activities because they represented "a manifestation of the people's will and a natural reaction to Japanese action."
