C. Fisken. Several previous winners succeeded the following year in winning one of the Derbies, while some went on to take high handicap honours. The 1!)2.'5 winner, Taurekareka, won both three-year-old classes, and subsequently won good races in Western Australia. .Mr. H. F. Nieoll has been the most successful owner, his wins being gained with Cliilde Pointer, Lafona, Nantwich and Arethusa.

War Buoy has proved one of the host horses who have won the Sapling Stakes, as in 21 starts his tally is 1(3 firsts and five placings. He beat it fine field of two-year-olds, including the Auckland crack, Chancellor, who was considered by many to have been unlucky in finishing third, but their subseq lent form has not borne out that contention. Two pacers, who afterwards reached '.he front rank, who failed in the two-year-old classic, were Red Shadow and Indianapolis. Gamble was another Sapling failure who has reached the innermost circle.

Southern Chief, who is the favoured of this year's field, is a very promising youngster, and is bred on the soundest lines. lie is by Wrack, from Regina Logan, a daughter of Logan Pointer and the Bellman marc, Pegina Belle. Logan Chief, one of the champions of his time, was a full-brother to the dam of Southern Chief, while Native Chief was another close relative. J. J. Ken-

nerley was associated with Logan Chief and Native Chief in their early successes, and his son, 11. D. Kennerley, will pilot Southern Chief. Next in popularity is Becky Direct, a well-developed and speedy filly by Frank Worthy from Becky Logan, another mare by Logan Pointer, and dam of Graham Direct. Becky Direct is well seasoned and ready for a hard contest. Parisienne, who was educated at Takanini, is a smart filly by Rey do Oro from Yenot, dam of Peter Junior. The Wellington-owned Frisco Boy, by Jack Potts —Daisy Pointer, and fullbrother to last year's winner, Frisco Lady, has come into prominence as the result of a good display last week.

Coylc's team has been built up by the return of Alloa, Round Score and Severe and the addition of the Laekham —Gold Necklace four-year-old, for whom the name of Gold Nymph has been claimed. The other three, while carrying their winter coats, look well. J. J. Waller has the veteran Tenacre under liis care, but the major portion of his work is carried out in the hunting field. Incidentally Waller educated The Ranger, a winner at Otaki, for the steeplechasing branch. During the summer iie jumped him at the shows and then, in his capacity of huntsman to the Manawatu Hunt, he qualified him with the hounds. S. Watson has Kitty Quin again 011 the tracks. When previously in work she showed some promise at the hurdling business.
