PURCHASE OF MATORU TO ENTER J. SHAW'S STABLE PLANS FOR JOLLY BEGGAR I BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday During the course of the Auckland Racing Club's meeting Mrs. D. Levin, Wellington, owner of Palm and Dollar Bill, acquired the three-year-old Matoru from his breeder, Mr. R. Hannon, and the gelding will be handed over to J. S. Shaw at the Wellington meeting next month by his present trainer, J. F. Tutehen. C. T. Wilson, who has been one of the most successful of the Dominion's apprentice jockeys during the season, has settled at Uiccart.on for a while. Courtyard is getting plenty of schooling, and to-day he was given a trial over the pony hurdles, which he cleared at a fast pace. H. Reale has arranged to ride Joll\ Beggar at the Grand National Meeting The gelding will not lie raced at Trentham, but will be treated to steady work until the August gathering. STITCIIBIRD'S VICTORY PROTEST TO BE HEARD TO-DAY I BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HASTINGS, Friday A protest has been entered by G. Neich, owner of Contract, against Stitehbird, winner of the Winter Handicap yesterday, on the ground that Stitehbird is trained by an unlicensed trainer. The hearing will bo at ten o'clock to-morrow morning. EX-AUCKLAND PACER NATIVE PRINCE REAPPEARS At the Ascot (Victoria) trotting meeting on June 1 the ex-Auckland pacer Native Prince made his reappearance after a long absence and finished second to Admiral Pronto in the Combined Handicap. Assessed on 2.16, Native Prince, who was conceding the winner 24 yards, ran 2.15'. Native Prince, who is by Native King —Miss Audrey, was bred in New Zealand. He won bis first races in Australia. but was later purchased by Mrs. I. E. Sueotapple, Auckland, for whom lie won good race?, t Epsom, Addington and Forbur.v Park. lb was one ol (be best free-leiiged pacers bred in the Dominion. During the last two seasons Native Prince has been doing stud dutv in Victoria. LICENSING OFFICIALS REMIT AFFECTING STARTERS Under English racing law, the clerk of tlic course, clerk of the; scales, starter, judge and handicapper, as a qualification for office, require a licence to be granted annually by the stewards of the .lockev Club. Knceeour.se gatekeepers ami ehecktakcrs also require an annual licence if employed at more than one meeting. The handicapper must attend the meeting to which he is appointed either personally or by licensed deputy. The remit being brought up before the conference by the Wellington dis-, trict clubs asking that the selection of starters he the duty of District Committees is a step toward the adoption of what obtains in England, where the appointments do not rest with the various clubs.
