OLD ENGLISH CUSTOMS
The lato A. R. Wright collected a vast amount of material relating to English Calendar Customs, traditional rites, that is to say, associated with some particular date or season. This h 0 did not live to publish; but a first selection from his records, restricted to customs associated with movable festivals (such as Shrovetide, Easter
and Whitsun), has now been edited by Dr. T. E. Lones. and is issued by the 'Folk-Lore Society. As Professor Hooke says in his preface:— " There is peculiar charm to be found in the reading of such n book as this! It is redolent of the English ooyntryside, its inarticulate love of ancient things, its immemorial speech, its stubborn resistance to the encroachments of changing time." "British Culendnr Customs. Ensrlann. .yphvme I,; M,ov*ble Festivals," by A. It. Wright. Edited by T. E. Lones. (William Glaisher.)
