PUKEKO CASE

APPEALS DISMISSED PENALTIES CONFIRMED OWNER-TRAINER AND JOCKEY The appeals of B. Burgess, ownertrainer of Pukeko, and of the rider, A. Jenkins, against the six months' disqualification imposed upon them by the judicial committee of the Auckland Racing Club on Saturday last, in connection with the running of Pukeko in the first division of the Jervois Handicap, were heard last evening by the Auckland District Committee.

Both appeals were dismissed, and the disqualifications were confirmed. Pukeko started favourite for the race, in which he finished fifth. After the race the judicial committee held an inquiry into his running and decided to disqualify the owner-trainer, B. Burgess, the jockey, A. Jenkins, and the horse for six months under rule 282 of the Rules of Racing:—"Every horse which ruys in a race shall be run on its merits, and every rider shall ride his horse out to the end of the race if he has any reasonable chance of running first, second, third or fourth, and shall in no case trust to the chance of a protest or objection."
