NEW DRIVING LICENCES

LAST-MINUTE RUSH Therd was .1 last-minute rush at the City Traffic Office yesterday when motor drivers queued up to obtain driving licences. The new licences came into force yesterday and those who had failed to secure renewals kept the staff busy all day. So far the Traffic Department has iseued just over 8000 of these licences, more than 1000 of these having been obtained from tho special officer stationed at the Automobile Association's depot in Lome Street. The total number issued is 2500 in excess of the number issued by June 1 of last year.

It is estimated that there are over 36,000 motor drivers in Auckl(®d city, but as many are merely week-end drivers and others will not register their oars until the end of the winter the issue of licences will go on steadily until the full number is reached. This year the Ckv Traffic Department is issuing licences in an undated cover and pasting the sheet bearing the licence inside. Each year a new slip will pasted in. By tho use of this method in place of the complete booklet for each year the traffic department iWill save about £6O.
