ASSUMED NAMES

PRIVILEGE IN RACING ITS RESTORATION DESIRED A.R.C. REMIT TO CONFERENCE "Until 1918 raring owners in New Zealand, in common with those in other parts of the world, were permitted to rare under a nom-de-course, but in that year the rule that no assumed name should be used in any entry was brought into force and has not been seripusly challenged until now. The Auckland Racing Club is fathering a remit to tlio Racing Conference next month, proposing that assumed names shall again be permitted. What the opinions of other delegates will be on tbc subject cannot bo prophesied but it would not be surprising if the subject were keenly debated.

1 be late Sir George Clifford strongly supported the present system. It was put forward that owners would not in any way be inconvenienced by racing under their own names, while, on the other hand, it would be more difficult to avoid the requirements of registration of ownership, and so on. It is contended by proponents of a reversion to the old privilege that compulsion to register particulars of ownership under one's own name need not, in fact, have the effect intended, and that it is aa easy to avoid registration of joint interests under one title as under another. In England and Australia assumed names have always been allowed, and one cannot recall any alarming facts that have arisen on that account. As a matter of fact, tho assumption of a nom-de-course is a harmless subterfuge, and an owner, unless he used very particular precautions, could not retain his nnonimity in racing circles for long. Nevertheless, it would be advisable al- j ways to indicate by quotation marks j that a name was assumed for racing! purposes, in publications other than the i Racing Calendar.

Consequential amendments to the rules will have to bo adopted in the event of this remit gaining the necessary number of votes. They include: No assumed name shall he used unless it has been registered with the Conference and appears continuously notified in the Official Calendar; 110 person shall have more than one assumed name registered at the same time, or use his real name in any entry so long as he has registered an assumed name; and no person under the age of 21, or who is, or resides with, or is employed by a trainer, jockey, bookmaker, or bookmaker's agent shall register an assumed name.

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE

TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Mae West is the name claimed for the rising yearling filly by Paladin from Lady Glanely, by Tea Tray, from Maid of the West, an English-bred inaro.

A proposal to be placed before the next Racing Conference, to be held next month, is that the lessor of a horse may, during the currency of a lease, enter for events to be run after the lease then current has expired.

A four-vonr-old gelding by Colossus from All Cerise lias been registered ns Sam's Choice. He is a half-brother to .All Humbug, but a more impressive relationship is that with the Adelaide Cup winner, Cape York, for their respective clams, All Cerise and Princess Pat, are sisters.

On most country racing club's bal-ance-sheets, there is an item embracing outstanding dues, but of late many clubs have put into operation a strict system, under which all fees have to be paid or arranged for before a horse is allowed to start. »ln the annual re port of the Geraldine Racing Club, it was shown that all fees for the financial year had been paid, and L'.'il' outstand ing collected in addition.

Velvet won the Droinore Steeples at Ashburton last year with 9.5, and this year, in what appears to be a stronger field, he has 9.13. However, he is a Liood jumper, with more than average pace, and, while the tracks are in their present good order in the South, he can lie expected to race prominently. At Washdyke he ran a very creditable second to Pahu in the Craigmore Hack Steeplechase, and at Ashburton he is set to meet his victor on only lib. better terms.
