MATCHES AT HELENSVILLE The following additional results of Rugby competitions played in country centres of the Auckland Province last Saturday have been forwarded by correspondents of the Herald:— Helensville,—Throe close scoring' panics were played in the Kaipara Union's competitions. .In the sonio( grade Helensville beat Silverdale by 16 points to 8 and Parakai had an easy win over Waimauku by 20 points to 3. The lender in the junior competition, Kumou, won by one point only from Knuknpakapn, 12—11, nnd Woodhill defeated Parakai by 8 points to a. Helensville run up its 16 points in the first half against' Silverdale, favoured by a southerly wind. In the second spell Silverdale took more chances nnd had Helensville defending for most of the spell. Te Pulto.—Matches played at Jubilee Park resulted: Senior—Papamoa. 14. Maketu, 5; United, 8, Pukehuia, 5. Junior: Papamon. 9, United. 6. In the junior match a promising young player, Hichons, was unfortunate in receiving a broken collarbone. Paeroa.—The first round of the Thames Valley Rugby Union's junior representative competition for the Sharebrokers' Cup was commenced, when Hauraki Plains defeated Paeroa by 10 points to 3. Hauraki Plains sot a strong pace from the start, but Paeroa held its own, tlier<> heing no score at halftime. The second spell opened with a try by Neat, who, securing from the ruck, forced his way over. Almost immediately the Hauraki Plains backs scored again, the ball passing to Neat, who outpaced the defence to register his second tiy, which lie converted himself. From a scrum the ball again reached Neat, who crossed lor his third try. Williams also scored, and Bagent converted, in a filial rush the Pi.eroa forwards carried play downfield. McGarry scoring. A senior match, the first of the Thames Valley Rugby Union's representative fixtures for the Frank Poland Memorial Cup, was played at Ngatea between Paeroa and Hauraki Plains, resulting in a win for the latter team by 17 points to 6. Childs, who played fivc-eightliß for Hauraki Plains, was outstanding, and scored two tries. Both were converted by Clark, who also kicked a penalty, while Costello potted a goal. For Paeroa, Clotworthy scored and Alp kicked a penalty goal. Rodney.—Tho Rodney Rugby Union's competition resulted:—Pakiri, 12, Puhoi, 5: Warkworth, 3, Port Albert, 3: Matakana, 15. Kaipara Flats, 5. Opotiki.—lnterest in Rugby has livened up considerably, gate-takings showing a big increase oil last year. O.M.P. playina Country started with three juniors, owing to a shortage of players, but held their own for the most of the game, and won by 16 points to 12. Whakatane City met Opotiki City. Whakatane were two men short and played two local juniorß. Opotiki won by 16 points to 5. In junior matches Country beat Torero by 12 points to 3. and City beat High School by 7 to 3. Te Awamutu. —In the senior section Te Awamutu Rovers secured a one-point victory over Frankton in a fast and exciting game, characterised by high scoring, with the result in doubt until the final whistle. The score was 25 points (sis tries, two of which were converted, and a penalty goal), to 24 (five tries, three of which were converted, nnd a penalty goal). Rovers' strength was in its forwards, while Frankton possessed cleverer and faster backs. For Rovers Young played an excellent game, and Griffiths was outstanding for Frankton. Tries for Rovers were scored by Holmes, Spence, Young (2), Quinn and Trwin, while Young kicked n penalty goal. For Frankton tries were scored by Heaps, Jones and Griffiths (3), while Denz kicked a penalty goal. Tauplrl.—Playing under the Taranaki scheme on Saturday, Tanpiri East met Taupiri West at Te Hoe, the former winning by 19 points to 3. The East team's forwards dominated play and made repeated chances for their backs to open up the game. The first score came to West after D. Catley, Harvey and Harris had handled, the last-named crossing. Solonmn and Davis were conspicuous in the winning team's rearguard, while Taylor nnd H. Catley were prominent amcng the forwards. Wilson played a sound game for the West team. Taupiri East's points came from converted tries by Davis and Rowe. and tries by Cleland. Davies and Soloman.
