NOISY BUSES

Sir, —From the tone of " Diesel's " letter in Thursday's Herald one must surely think that my remarks touched him on a weak spot. His remarks savour of a biassed mind, in favour of Diesel engines, whether they be noisy or quiet. I now learn that some types are not so noisy as others. Speaking of progress, and " keeping abreast of the times " does " Diesel " imagine that these engines have reached their final stage of development? There is no occasion to have noisy Diesels in New Zealand, and as we have a Noise Abatement Society I hope they will take up this new challenge in a vigorous manner. The leading health authorities in the world are endeavouring to reduce or eliminate noise. The noise of Takapuna Bus No. 17 can be heard distinctly inside a house with closed doors and windows a mile distant. That is surely proof enough that times are " not so quiet on the waterfront." No Longer Mystified.
