WATER FOR MANUREWA

COMMITTEE APPOINTED BOARD OF HEALTH INQUIRY Advice from tlie Minister of Health, the Hon. P Fraser, that the Board of Health had appointed a committee to visit Manurewa in connection with the proposed water scheme was received last night by the Town Board. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Ferguson, said that the board had telegraphed to the Minister pointing to the water shortage caused by the dry spell and asking that the Board of Health expedite consideration of the request to proceed with the water scheme. - The Minister's telegram in reply stated that the board had considered the application and the committee which it had appointed would visit the district to gather evidence. On receipt of tlie committee's report 110 time would be lost in reaching a decision. In a discussion on the methods to be adopted in presenting evidence it was suggest-ed that the board should call a public meeting to discuss the position. Air. E. S. Pegler said the board had already submitted statements in support of the water scheme. It would be sufficient to put the Board of Health Committee in touch with the sources of the information. Ho suggested the Town Board invite the local medical men and clergymen to give evidence to the committee. Mr. H. 11. Maxwell said it was essential that the committee should make its visit at an early date. The water shortage was becoming acute and would bo serious unless there was an early rainfall. "Applications for the supply of water are increasing every day," said Mr. •T. H. Edwards. It was causing considerable expenso to provide the residents with very limited supplies. While there was 110 hope of the proposed water scheme relieving the position for some months, it was advisable to have a permanent supply installed to safeguard the health of the 1600 residents in the district. It was decided to request the Ministor to arrange for the committee's visit at an early date.
