WORK IN BANKS
HOURS AND OVERTIME SPECIAL PROVISIONS LEGISLATION AMENDED [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Thursday Amendments relating to hours of work in banks and to special purposes for which bank employees may work overtime were made to the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, during the Committee stage of tho bill in the House of Representatives tp-day. It is stipulated that overtime rates of pay shall apply only to extended hours worked in each fortnight in excess of 80 hours, but in tho case of a period of four weeks for the period of each yearly or half-yearly balance a total of 90 hours in each fortnight is permitted before overtime is paid. Another amendment defines tho following purposes for which an offico assistant in a bank may be employed after closing hours: — The balancing of the cash or cash book after the close of the day's transactions, Ihe periodical balancing of the ledgers, tho yearly or half-yearly balance of the business of the bank, writing up of tho books for the day's transactions, the remittance for collection of bills of exchange, promissory notes, cheques and other mercantile instruments drawn on other places, work incidental to tho sending by mail out of New Zealand of documents relating to goods exported or to bo exported from New Zealand, special work arising in circumstances of urgency, the clearing up of arrears in office work due to special circumstances; provided that in no case shall an assistant bo employed for this purposo for more than three hours on any ono day or for more than six days in any one month. Mr. Armstrong said the amendments had been approved by tho banks and also by the Bank Officers' Guild. The amendments were adopted and inserted in tho bill, which was passed by the House,
