SMUGGLING IN CHINA
REMARKS BY MR. EDEN HARM TO JAPANESE TRADE British Wireless RUGBY, May 27 The Foreign Secretary, Mr. Eden, answered a number of questions in the House of Commons to-day in smuggling in Northern China. In referring to various suggestions for improving the position which were put forward in questions, Mr. Eden said ho thought the best means of checking smuggling would be the restoration to Chinese preventive agencies of normal means of exercising their authority. So far as he was aware, said Mr. Eden, no other Government, apart from those of China, Britain and the United States, had made * representations on this subject to Tokio, but the British Ambassador had kept in close touch with the representatives of tho other interested Powers. Tho Minister added that tho attention of the Japanese Government had been called to the detriment caused to legitimate Japanese interests in general by the incidence of wholesale smuggling in North China.
