HARBOUR BRIDGE
NEW CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT | A campaign to urge the Government to construct the proposed Auckland Harbour Bridge was opened last nipht in the Foresters' Hall. Birkenhead; Tie deputy-Mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. L Hadfiekl, presided. Mr. J. Littlejohn, Birkenhead riding member of the Waitemata County Council, said the promoters of the can* paign came forward in no spirit of antagonism to. any other body desirous of having the bridge built, but » order to consolidate expression of opinion that the bridge was urgent. It was intended to hold a series of meet* ings on the North Shore and in surrounding districts, and to forward resolutions to the Government urging the necessity for proceeding with the bridge immediately. It was desired that the Government should announce its intention of bnilding the bridge before bringing down the housing scheme, in order tint people would build .on the northern side of the harbour. Large numbers would live on the northern side if they kne* the bridge was to be built. They WWconvinced that the only body capable of building the bridge was the Go 7 * eminent. Mr. C. H. M. Wills said it was on!? as the result of strong agitation twt works such as the East Coast r»ilw? were undertaken. Similar tactics in®* be adopted to secure a bridge free all. • >v Mr. J. C. Bennie, Takapuna riding member of the Waitemata ■ County Council, said he was satisfied-the bridge company had done its host, bat he also convinced it had failed. Mr. W r . B. Darlow said the compa®.' had been telling them for the pasts® 1 *" years that it. "was just round tns corner." A resolution urging the Government to build the bridge was earn® unanimously.
