OBITUARY

MR. RICHAKD COCK JARANAKI BUSINESS MAN LIFE SPENT IN NEW PLYMOUTH [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday Eighty-five years' experience of New Plymouth was the lot of Mr. Richard Cock, who died suddenly this morning. Only'yesterday Mr. Cock was able to attend to his duties as president of the New Plymouth Savings Bank. His life was lived wholly at New Plymouth, where he was born in 1851, when tho town was merely a settlement. He saw the settlement steadily grow and he rendered it fine service as a member of tho borough council, Mayor and in many other public capacities. Mr. Cock bore arms as far back as the Maori wars. Ho was a colour-sergeant in the historic march on Parihaka in 1881 and during the arrest of Te Whiti. Mr. Cock was educated at Crompton's school. When he was still only a boy he went to Tataraimaka with the 43rd Regiment, which was about to attack Johnny's Flat. Ho was later apprenticed to Dr. Humphries, chemist and druggist, for seven years, but left him in 1875 to start a small business on his own account. In public life Mr. Cock served on many local bodies and was closely associated with the provision of many amenities which the town of New Plymouth now enjoys. He was also a director of many companies which are still in active business and was one of the founders of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce.

Associated with the late Mr. Newton King and with the late Mr. J. C. George, Mr. Cock assisted to establish the Crown Dairy Company, which, at the time, was the largest dairy company in New Zealand. The company bought out the existing factory at Woodville, and built or bought out nine other factories in the Hawke's Bay district. MR. GEORGE ROUT The death of Mr. George liout, for 35 years a steward in the service of the Northern Steamship Company, occurred at his residence. Mount Albert, on Wednesday. Mr. Rout was born in England in 1859 and came to New Zealand in the ship Loch Awe in 1874. He was engaged in business in the old Market Square in Auckland for some years and then joined the Northern Company, with which he remained until his retirement in 1927. MR. ARTHUR HICKFORD [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday The death has occurred in Hamilton of Mr. Arthur Hickford, at the age of 67 years. Mr. Hickford was born in Sudbury, Suffolk-, and came to New Zealand as a child. He lived in the Kongotea district for many years and then came to Hamilton. He served on several school committees and was formerly a member of the Wanganui Education Board. Ho is survived by hia wife and eight children.

MRS. PERCY GOING [FROM Ol'E OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, Thursday The death has occurred at her residence at Maromaku of Mrs. Percy Going, aged 68. Mrs. Going was a daughter of Mr. R. Cutforth, a pioneer of the Port Albert district. When a young girl her parents moved to Ituatangata, near Whangarei, where she married Mr. Going. The couple first farmed in that locality, but in 1900 they moved to Maromaku. Mrs. Going toot a keen, active interest in the annual Towai agricultural and pastoral show, of which organisation she was president of the ladies' committee. She is survived by her husband and 10 children. MR. B. S. SOMMERVILLE [BY TELEGRAM PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON, Thursday The death has occurred of Mr. B. S. Somnierville, a director of the firm of .J. W. Wallace and Company, merchants, of Wellington. He joined the firm in 1595. Mr. Somnierville took no active part in public affairs, but for many years was a member of the Wellington Savage Club.

MR. ROBERT FORBES [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION "J ■NELSON. Thursday The death has occurred at Brightwater of Mr. Bobert Forbes, secretary of the Waimea Co-operative Dairy Coinpaiiyj who saw service with the Seafortli Highlanders in the Great War from 1914 to 1919. For five years he was in West Africa and came to New Zealand on tbe staff of Lever Bros. Later he was engaged by the Dairy Control Board and afterward was secretary of the Hokianga Dairy Company. Ho took up bis work in the Nelson district in 1930.
