ROADS IN WHAKATANE
♦ QUESTION OF OPENING COUNCIL DISSATISFACTION [by telegraph—OWN' correspondent] WHAKATANE. Thursday Dissatisfaction was voiced at a fleeting of the Whakatane County Council yesterday jvhen a letter was received from the Primo Minister, Mr. Savage, in regard to the opening of the Muru-para-Kangitaiki Hotel Koati. The letter stated that the matter of the lowlevel road from Murupara to the Napier-Taupo Road had been discussed with the Minister of Public Works. Cabinet bad discussed a suggestion to open tho high-level road for general traffic, added the letter, and tbis Jed to a Cabinet direction that a report bo obtained upon the low-level road, but not to any approval by Cabinet of the opening of such road. The Forestry Department had very strong and wellgrounded objections to tho opening of tho roads to general traffic. Tbo cost of opening either route would be at least £12,000, apart from tho construction costs.
It was decided to write to the Prime Minister stating that tho council was disappointed with the whole affair. It was also decided to ask permission to inspect tho road, so that tho council could make its own estimate of costs of construction. „
Mr. C. H. Burnett. M.P., advised that tho Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Somple, had promised to mako an early visit to the Whakatano County. It was decided to arrange for the inspection of tho Te Teko-Waiohau-Gula-tea Bond to bo included in the Minister's itinerary.
