BUILDINGS IN BRICK
REVISING PUKEKOHE AREA
DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] PUKEKOHE, Tuesday The readjustment of the brick area at Pukekohe was proposed by the Mayor, Mr. C. fe. Lawrie, at a special meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council. In defining amended boundaries, he said land which was not likely to be required for othor than residential purposes for many years to come would be excluded by their adoption and thus hardship on the owners avoided. This should obviate applications for exemptions from the brick area provisions. Messrs. H. K. Clayton and P. Miller also advocated that, in fixing new boundaries, the council should make it clear that no exemptions could be allowed. That it would be absolutely impracticable to have an area in which all future building would have to be in permanent materials was the view expressed by Messrs. G. T. Paryin and G. H. Armstrong. The latter saiu there were a number of wooden buildings still in the main street, and to absolutely prohibit any little alteration or addition unless it was in brick or concrete, or to disallow their being moved back to make way for new buildings in permanent materials would, in his opinion, be retarding progress. K. Brown said the town had a population of 2600, but tho present brick was suitable for one with 20,000 to 30,000 people. Consideration of the matter was deferred until next Monday.
