WINTER CARNIVAL

RACES AT ELLERSLIE MANY OTHER ATTRACTIONS A big influx of visitors will lend a carnival atmosphere to Auckland next week when, with the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting as the central attraction, there will bo a programme of entertainment as comprehensive as in any previous year.

Included in the programme on the first and second days of the races are the Great Northern Hurdles and the Great Northern Steeplechase respectively, the two most important jumping events of the winter racing season in Auckland.

Considerable interest will bo taken in the sports events to be conducted at the Town Hall. A boxing programme of outstanding merit has been arranged for Monday evening, when there will be a return bout between Cyril Pluto, the welter-weight champion of Western Australia, and Fred ("Kid") Fisher, the English middleweight. Pluto, one of the most skilful boxers to appear in Auckland, won the last bout on points, and the public will be keen to see if Fisher can turn the tables. In addition to this bout, there will bo a programme of amateur matches between leading Auckland and Hastings boxers, and another one of tho popular teams' contests. A leading part in tho carnival week programme is always played by the Railway Department, which makes special arrangements for tho transport of passengers. The department has already prepared a time-table suitable to the needs of those who wish to visit Auckland during the race meeting, and special trains have been provided to suit tho convenience of country visitors, while the arrangements include reduced fares and excursion tickets to the racecourse platform.and Auckland from any station between Maungaturoto and Frankton Junction.

Visitors to the city during carnival week who are interested in hunting will have good entertainment provided for them by the Pakuranga Hunt Club, which is holding a meet at the East Tamaki Hall on June 1, and another at the Howick School on Juno 4. Following the precedent of the combined Canterbury hunts, which hold their hunt ball during Grand National Week, the Hunt will hold its annual ball at the Peter Pan Cabaret on June 2. Daily skating sessions at Roushworths' rink in Khybor Pass will be another attraction on the entertainment programme during the racing carnival. A band will play at the rink every evening and on Saturday afternoons.
