THE WEEKLY NEWS
FLYING HAZAEDS
LATE AIRMAN'S VIEWS
GREAT NORTHERN REVIEW By a sad coincidence, an article on air hazards in New Zealand by the late Mr. \V. M. O'Hara had been prepared for this week's issue of The Weekly News when advice came that the author had been killed in a crash in Australia while making a flight to Java.
After his flight from Australia to New Zealand a few months ago this popular New Zealander spent a long holiday flying thousands of miles over his native land and was able to gain an interesting insight into the future of aviation here. His views, published in The Weekly News, on sale to-day, will command widespread attention.
Another feature of The Weekly News this week is the article on the early days at Gabriel's Gully, where the first important gold rush occurred in New Zealand. The 75th anniversary of the discovery was celebrated on the spot in Otago last week and the picture section of The Weekly News contains a double-page of photographs of the jubilee. Another set of pictures shows the daughters of Their Excellencies Viscount and Viscountess Gahvay competing in junior riding competitions at Masterton last week. A notable London wedding of New Zealand interest was that of Lieutenant-Com-mander Peter Dawnay to Lady Angela Scott, sister of the Duchess of Gloucester. They are now on their way to New Zealand, where the bridegroom will join the Dominion Division of the Royal Navy. The ceremonial presentation of new colours to the Waikato Regiment last Sunday is illustrated, and also the test flight of the first "Flying Flea" at Mangere, Empire Day in Auckland, and the ship Herzogin Cecilie on the rocks on the Devon coast.
Among the sporting features this week are a review of the form for the opening day of the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday, a complete tabulated history of the Great Northern Steeplechase, a Rugby article by Mark Nicholls/ another instalment of the Hon. H. D. Mcintosh's boxing wrestling and boxing news, and a wide variety of other sports.
