FERRIER IN SCOTLAND SILVER TASSIE WON REMARKABLE AGGREGATE < By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received May 24, 5,5 p.m.) LONDON, May 23 The silver tassie golf tournament at Gleneagles, Perthshire, was won to-day by James Ferrier (Australia). The entries had not been equalled for years for their size and class. The event is regarded as a useful "pipe-opener" for the amateur championship at St. Andrews. Ferrier was one of 130 entrants, among whom was the holder of the tassie, Sweeney (South Africa), Locke and other stars. Ferrier gave a magnificent performance in the first round over the King's course, which he did in 72. He tied for the leading place with the multimillionaire Captain Francis, of Dundeo.
The Australian's second round on the Queen's course in the afternoon was done in 68, making his aggregate 140. He played faultlessly, his iron shots dropping round the pin, but at the eighteenth be took three putts which prevented him tieing with the amateur record of 67.
Ferrier's aggregate is the lowest by which the tassie has ever been won. The nearest is Cyril Tolley's 141 in 1925. Locke and Sweenev finished with 149. Other scores were: —11. S. Walker (Scottish champion), 73 —71; G. A. Hill (Sandy Lodge), 74—70. nearest opponents were Median, 72 7f». Sweeney, 79 —70, and Locke, 18 71. Francis was not in the first 11. Feirier is regarded as one of the likely winners of the open championship.
