EVEREST CLIMBERS
WORK ON NORTH COL COMPLETION OF ROUTE 'cm ■ ■ Times Cable , LONDON, May 15 In a copyright message to the Times wirelessed from Camp 3 via Calcutta, Mr. Hugh Rutledge, leader of the British Mount Everest expedition, says: Mr. F. S. Smythe, Lieutenant J. M. Oliver, Mr. F. H. Wigram, Lieutenant J. M L. Gavin and eight picked porters have completed a route up the great ice face of the North Col, and have cut steps and fixed ropes most of the way. The route was steep but reasonably safe from avalanches. Messrs. Wyn Harris and E. 6. H. Kempson,. with 46 porters, have started for the North Col.
It is hoped that Camp 4, at a height of 23,000 feet, will be completely stocked to-morrow. Messrs. Smythe and E. E. Shipton will then occupy it, accompanied, by the porters selected to establish the highest camps. The weather,is marvellously quiet but there is rather too much snow on the mountain.
