PHILISTINES' CLUB

OPENING NIGHT With Mr. C. D. McLean as chairman, the members of the Philistines' Club held their first social evening of the season in the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society's Hall on Saturday. There was a large attendance of members and visitors, who were received by the chairman and Mrs. McLean. The latter wore a frock of black ring velvet. The chairman, who was piped into the hall by Mr. Len Amor, spoke of the days of chivalry as pictured in the works of Burns, Shakespeare and Mark Twain and proposed an interesting plan for the encouragement of poetry by the club.

A varied programme had been arranged, tho following items being presented: —Scottish dance, by Miss Esme Nodder; ventriloquism, by Mr. Allan Matthews; songs, by Miss Beryl Smith, Miss Pat McLeod, Mr. Geof. College and Mr. Gordon Fagan; instrumental items, by the Salon Quartette, Miss Helen Gray, Miss Marjorie Tiarks, Miss Kathleen O'Leary and Miss Moya Cooper-Smith; solo dancing, by Miss Laurie McLeod. A play entitled "Tho Miracle Merchant," was presented by Miss M. MeCullough, Miss M. Pilkinson, Miss Joan Dive, Mr. Richard Sharp and Mr. Xante Wood. Among those present were: —Mrs. D.
