DEFEAT OF CITY
NEWTON'S GOOD RECOVERY' A good recovery by Newton in the second half and better finish to the play of the backs were the deciding factors in a keen game with City. The latter impressed early but the backs were handicapped without the ball from set scrums and played on the defensive throughout most of the second half. The tackling of some of the City backs was weak. Two tries by Newton should have been stopped long before the movements were dangerous. The Newton backs attacked early m the game and ten pdints were scored before City settled down. However, the with Tawhai prominent, swept over the' 'opposition, Twelve points were added in as many minutes and City took the lead. Good play by Bright; at centre, gave Newton excellent chances, and the backs showed moro speed on attack than City. The Newton backs showed fine positional play on occasions, while the forwards were quick in givin& support City will need to find a hooker before any succesH can come its way. The backs combined effectively at times, but they lacked chances without the ball from set s'fcrums. ■*. For Newton E. Brimble played a snlen did game at five-eighths and often cut the defence to ribbons. He ran straight, once a gap was noticed and this gave tho three-quarters room to work. Bright was in his best form at centre and cleverly paved tho way for two tries. Young was sound at fullback and made few mistakes. Behind the scruin W. Brimble sent the ball out smartly but spoiled a good game by holding on in passing bouts. Sissens wnH also prominent on attack. Hutt. Quirke and (rindere worked hard rtmong tho Newton forwards- * Wiberg played a sound game at fullback for City. L. Brown was a tower of strength at centir and «ns always prominent on attnek. Tawhai cut in nicely nt times and is dangerous near the line. G. Brown, on the wing, tackled very poorly. Herring and Dye were tho best of the Oitv forwards and McLaughlin was' also prominent. For Newton tries were scored by Bright (2). and E. Brimble and Hutt. Sissens converted four tries. For Oitv Donovan and McLaughlin scored tries. Wiberg converted one try and kicked three penalty goals nnd a field goal. Mr. AV, Simpson was referee.
