JAPANESE PUBLICATION
A GOODWILL ISSUE " Japan, Australia and New Zealand, 1 a publication of 250 pages, produced by the Osaka Mainiehi and dedicated "To lasting friendship among Australia, New Zealand and Japan, founded upon realisation of the bond of mutual benefit and common interests," is striking testimony to the enterprise of a Japanese publishing house. It is full of informative articles and profusely illustrated with reproductions of photographs and, paintings of artistic excellence. The reproductions, many of which are in colour, are noteworthy as examples of technical excellence in engraving and printing. It is amazing that a reproduction in colour of a magnificent oil painting of the Mount Stewart, the last of the wool clippers, could have been made, ns stated, from a Christmas card, so extraordinarily good is it in colour. There are no fewei than 2:id articles on various phases of the social and business life and scenic attractions of the three countries. The Japanese articles are often verv arresting. The Australian contributions to the letterpress are also excellent. By comparison the New Zealand articles are very disappointing, several being from official sources and being dull and without literary distinction. It is also unfortunate that the selection of New Zealand scenes is commonplace and does not do justice to the country.
