NEW LABOUR CLUB
OFFICIAL OPENING HELD LARGE SOCIAL GATHERING The official opening of the Labour Social Club was held at its rooms in the Pacific Buildings on Saturday night. The ceremony was performed by Mr. F. W. Schramm, M.P., on behalf of the patron of the club, the Pt. Hon. M. .T. Savage, who was unable to bo present owing to his Ministerial duties in Wellington. There was a large attendance of supporters of the Labour movement.
Mr. Schramm, who was introduced by Mr. C. J. Matthew, president of the Auckland central branch of the Labour Party, said that in addition to an apology from the Prime Minister, he had been asked to convey apologies for non-attendance from various members of the Cabinet, and from Mr. F. Martin, secretary of the Auckland branch of the Labour Party.
The club, he said, had been formed so that members of the Labour Party and those in sympathy with the movement could gather for social purposes. It would fill a long felt want. Mr. Schramm paid a tribute to the work of Mr. J. T. Jennings, president of the Auckland Labour Representation Committee, and president of the newlyformed club, in securing the rooms. Mr. Jennings said the club, which for long had been an ideal, was now a reality. It remained for those present to niake it a success. He felt that the efforts of the promoters had been rewarded by the size of the attendance, and appealed to all to make the club a credit to the Labour movement. The following items were given:— Violin solo. Miss D. Highain; humorous items, Mr. Alan McEhvain and Mr. R. M. Beswick; song and dance, Miss D. Barraclough; piano accordion solo, Mr. R. McKenna; recitation, Miss P. Lind; fancy dance, Miss E. Tullett; song. Mr. j. Do Rosa. The rest of the evening was spent in dancing, the music being played by Miss Winifred Cooke. The club rooms arc those formerly occupied by the Pacific Club. They are comfortably furnished and consist, of reading, smoking, billiard and refreshment rooms, a social hall and an up-to-date kitchen. Provision has also been made for a library. Games of all descriptions and lectures will bo provided for members. The club hours will lie from noon to 10.30 p.m. daily, with the exception of Sunday, when the rooms will be closed.
