REST FOR COWS

PERIOD OF RECUPERATION Every dairy cow should have at least two months' rest in which to recuperate before she calves again. During this time she should be just as well treated in regard to food as when in production, and will require more care in these cold months in the way or shelter and rugging. Where covers for all the cows are not available, satisfactory substitutes can be made from used wool-packs. One wool-pack,, slit down opposite corner beams, will make two covers if the lid and bottom are cut from corner to corner and, after being roughly hemmed, are sewn on to form the Haps which cover the cow's shoulders and meet under its neck. The oil from the cow's coat will shortly make these comparatively waterproof, but they can easily be made absolutely 60, and will last much longer, if they are painted over lightly with a mixture of raw linseed oil and BUgar of lead, applied hot.
