DETECTIVES RETURN

STUDY OF POLICE METHODS NEW ZEALANDERS IN LONDON (Received May 7, 9.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. May 7 Detectives H. Murch, of Auckland, and W. McLennan, of Wellington, reached Sydney to-day by the liner Ormonde after a trip abroad to study police methods. Detective Mureh said that, although detective work was the same the world river, tho magnitude of operations in London was amazing. "We spent some time studying at the Metropolitan Police College, Hendon," he added, "and as far as we could see, the system of putting public school and University men through the Police Collego and turning them out as inspectors is not working well. "Young men take up their work lacking the practical experience they would have obtained if they had started on the beat "

Detective Murch said there was close co-operation between tho metropolitan und county police in England as the result of the Police Collego and the county police were returning to the provinces after their training with advanced metropolitan ideas. The two New Zealanders were much impressed by tho efficiency of the wireless patrol and by the activities of the information room ,at headquarters in London.

Detectives Murch and McLennan were the first two officers to proceed to London for training under the new scheme announced in September, 1935, by the then Minister of Justice, Mr. J. G. Cobbe. They left New Zealand by the Rangitiki on November 19 last year.
