CLEARING OF WILLOWS
WAITOA RIVER WORK STATE OFFER WITHDRAWN [by telegraph OWN correspondent] TE AROHA, Thursday Following upon the offer of the previous Government to proceed with the clearing of willows from the Waitoa River subject to the Thames Valley Drainage Board contributing £I6OO toward the estimated total cost of £IO,OOO, advice has been received by the Drainage Board that the offer is now withdrawn. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, has advised the board that in view of the.interval that has elapsed since the original offer was made on October 25 and the fact that the availability of unemployment funds as a contribution toward the cost of the work had undergone a substantial change, and having in view also the proposed increase of the basic wage and the suggestion that the work should be extended, he thought it better that the offer originally made should be regarded as suspended, or withdrawn, until such time as the estimate for the work and the possibility of finding finance could be further, investigated. Action in the latter respect was now in hand and he would communicate further as soon as possible.
