MONEY STOLEN BY WOMAN REMANDED FOR SENTENCE Pleading not guilty to a charge of stealing from James Meikle the sum of £1 ss, Eunice O'Brien, a married woman aged 31, appeared before Mr. E. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Mr. G. Skelton appeared for the accused. The woman had accosted Meikle in the lounge of a city hotel, and had asked him to have a drink with her, stated Sub-Inspector Fox. Meikle refused, but invited her to have a drink with him. Later they left the hotel and Meikle had alleged that the woman stole the money from his clothing. When asked about the money, t accused admitted having taken it, and \vas prepared to give it back. She had it in her shoe.

Accused was remanded in custody until Saturday for sentence.

A charge of assaulting his wife was admitted by James Harry 0 Quinn, aged Jit), a ship's fireman. Sub-Inspector ["'ox said that O'Quinn had a family of live children. At present he was on compensation and was not working. Most of his time he was away from home, and most of his money lie spent on drink. On coming home on Wednesday night there was some delay in connection with the evening meal and accused struck his wife on the face. He had not previously been convicted, but his wife had complained that she had been assaulted on other occasions. He was a brutal sort of man.

" So he knocked a little woman like that about, did he?"'said the magistrate, when Mrs. O'Quinn. with her left eye bandaged, came into the courtroom. O'Quinn was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. On a charge of stealing a quantity of clothing and a hypodermic syringe, of a total value of £9 5s 6d, Hazel Mary Carswell, aged 35, was remanded to appear next Thursday. In order that further inquiries may be made by the police. George Arthur Dix, aged 60, a carpenter, who pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing quantities of lead, valued at £3 Is, the property of J. A. Moody, was remanded until next Thursday.
